Supporting Sucking Skills Book Group

Thank you to all of the people who registered!
We are full!
Look for another group in the future!!!
Join our virtual Supporting Sucking Skills Book Group! Engage with like-minded breastfeeding enthusiasts!

Do you want to unlock the secrets of Supporting Sucking Skills? Barbara D. Robertson will be joined by Cathy Watson Genna, the author of the book, to break this down for you. Having a structured format tends to move things from the "oh I should do that" to DONE!

For this group we will be using Zoom Meeting. and Thinkific, an online learning platform. September 7, 2020, or if you register later, when you register, you will get an invitation to join us on Thinkific, an easy to use, online learning program. You will see the required reading listed for each of our ten sections and meetings.

You will need to get your own copy of Supporting Sucking Skills in Breastfeeding Infants, 3RD EDITION. The 1st or 2nd editions will not do! So much has changed in these past years. You will read the assigned chapters, attend our live Zoom meetings or listen to our recording meeting discussion with Q and A, review any supplemental materials, and then, if you registered for our 30 CERPs version, take the quiz at the end of each session.

30 L-CERPs Early bird price $199  (Ends September 7, 2020) Regular price $250
No CERPs Early bird price $120 (Ends September 7, 2020) Regular price $150

What is a book group?

A book group is where a group of like minded people get together after having read the same materials. Usually, they get together (often with a glass of wine!) but during COVID groups are meeting virtually. They then can have an informed discussion about those materials. Usually, the author of the book does not attend the meetings. The power of a book group is the collective knowledge, experience, and perspectives from its members. Each person's voice needs to be heard to form questions for discussion and to be able to analysis the materials. We are honored to have the author Catherine Watson Genna join us for 9 out of our 10 sessions! This means for one session we will be our own experts to create and discuss the materials.

When will this be?

The dates for this book group are:
Session 1: Sunday, September 20, 2020 6:30 PM EDT
Session 2: Sunday, September 27, 2020 6:30 PM EDT
Session 3: Sunday, October 4, 2020 6:30 PM EDT
Session 4: Sunday, October 11, 2020 6:30 PM EDT
Session 5: Sunday, November 1, 2020 6:30 PM EDT
Session 6: Sunday, November 8, 2020 6:30 PM EDT
Session 7: Sunday, November 15, 2020 6:30 PM EDT
Session 8: Sunday, November 29, 2020 6:30 PM EDT
Session 9: December 6, 2020 6:30 PM EDT
Session 10: December 13, 2020 6:30 PM EDT

Each session is a 1.5-2 hour Zoom meeting where we will discuss the materials and answer questions. Before each session you will read the assigned chapters (most sessions only have one chapter but four sessions so have two) and any supporting materials, and then taking a quiz at the end of each session.
You must buy the most recent edition of the book! This is Supporting Sucking Skills in Breastfeeding Infants Third Edition, 2017 by Catherine Watson Genna.

The Zoom meetings will be recorded so you have the flexibility of missing a session if needed and then listening to the recorded Zoom meeting at your leisure.

You will have access to all the materials until 1-15-21.

Do you struggle with:

  • Discerning whether there is actually a problem that needs more intervention than just better latching and positioning help or the tincture of time?
  • Understanding where to start when exploring why the baby is causing pain, not getting enough milk, or not latching at all?
  • Knowing the best ways to help remedy these situations?
  • Sharing information about which professionals to refer to?
  • Identifying exactly what to try next?
  • Explaining which alternative ways of feeding babies might be best?

For this virtual book group you will need:

  1. The 20217 copy of the 3rd Edition of Supporting Sucking Skills for Breastfeeding Infants
  2. A decent computer (phones don't work as well for this type of meeting)
  3. To be tech savvy, familiar with Zoom meetings
  4. About 3-4 hours per session to read 30-50 pages, participate in or listen to our recorded Zoom meeting of the discussion with Q and A, and if you want CERPs, complete the quiz for each session.

Rules of engagement for questions:
The Right - And Wrong - Way To Ask A Question

Remember that this book group is a group to expand general knowledge about how to help families make more breastmilk. This is not a time to give a specific scenario and get a plan of what to do for that family or yourself. We will answer one question per person and take as many questions as possible during our time together.

We’ve discovered that there are two ways to ask a question. The first way is to ask a question that relates to a concept, strategy or idea shared in the book group and frame it in a way where the answer can benefit the entire group. This method gets two thumbs up and wild cheers from everyone.

The other way is more self-serving. It’s when you ask a question that’s so specific to you and not connected to the curriculum, that it’s hard for anyone else to relate or get value.

This kind of question gets a sad face from us, and especially from your fellow students.

The moral of the story is, of course, to ask a question in a way that serves both you and our entire community.

There are a few ground rules here. Start with your full name and where you’re from. Please keep your questions as concise as possible. If we need more details or backstory, she’ll let you know.

It’s our intention that this time together will bring you incredible clarity, inspiration and motivation. Not to mention some as-close-to-in-person-as-possible fun! We know it’s a virtual program but we feel so connected to this community and we are passionately committed to helping you become more knowledgeable about how to make more breastmilk.
